Property Total Management
Please take a moment to review these tips for staying safe and protecting your home during Winter Weather.
Safety
Supervise candles at all times, if you choose to use them
If you see a fallen power line or tree blocking the road, report it to 911
Report an electrical outage by texting OUT to 57801, online at https://outagereport.duke-energy.com/, or by calling 800.POWERON (800.769.3766)
Keep pets inside
Check in with family, friends, and neighbors
Monitor trusted local news sources for relevant and actionable updates
Heating and Plumbing
You must maintain a minimum indoor temperature of 60°F during the winter months to prevent freezing pipes and property damage
Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can circulate around pipes
Let faucets drip slightly if temperatures drop below freezing (32°F or 0°C)
If you notice no water, very low water pressure, or suspect a frozen pipe, report the emergency to us immediately
Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots
If power is lost, place towels under doors and blankets over windows to help keep heat inside
Make sure all windows and doors are fully closed and locked
Travel and Outdoor Safety
You are responsible for routine snow removal and salting of walkways and driveways, unless specified otherwise in your Lease.
Store any items that can break or fall due to ice/snow weight, such as tents and umbrellas
Use extra caution on steps, sidewalks, and parking areas, as surfaces may be icy even if they look clear
Park cars away from trees and power lines that might fall
Fill up your car gas tank, in case travel becomes necessary
Avoid driving if at all possible
Power Outage Preparation
If the thermostat uses batteries, ensure they are fully charged
Charge phones and necessary devices in advance
Conserve phone battery
Have battery‑operated flashlights ready and extra batteries available
Have a working battery‑operated radio
Supplies
Have sufficient potable water (1 gallon per person per day for 3–5 days)
Stock up on non‑perishable foods
Maintain extra baby supplies (diapers and formula)
Have a first aid kit and necessary medications available
Maintain enough food/medicines for pets
Carbon Monoxide: Known as an "invisible killer" because it's a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas
Test carbon monoxide detectors and change batteries if needed
Do not use outdoor heaters or grills inside the home
Never use a gas grill or charcoal grill indoors
Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris, such as leaves and dirt
Only use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, and vents
Do not use a generator in a wet area
Connect appliances using heavy-duty extension cords
If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow
